Is it true?

Aug 3, 2008

So I just finished my Summer 2 Semester (I'm a college student) in ENGLISH 071 and going to ENGLISH 101 in Fall.

I'm not American or spoke English since I was born yet I'm one of the top 3 of the class.

This Nigerian guy asked me why he's seatmate (an American) got F grade while when he talks in English it's seem okay.

So I talked to this guy, it seems when he talks, he doesn't talk in "Fragment". So I was wondering why he failed. I asked the instructor why.

Her answer:

"49% here is American. 51% of you are not American or didn't speak since you were young. 67% of the American student here got F-C. Only 2 student got A, and the rest B, while you non-Americans averaged at B (85%-88%). You asked why he failed? His work is not for college and still a high school paper, he doesn't follow the rules and he think this class is like ENG061 (ENG061 is where you study Part of Speech and write every day Journal, which is I think where she meant "high school paper.)

and lastly, he's an American."

So after that, I was like "Whoa". Did she mean that Americans can't write or something? I felt like she was kinda racist or something like that.

Do really some Americans today fails English classes or can't write a college paper??

Yeah! Im 13 and some of my friend sin english get F's. Its just people here, dont study for stuff like that, its like we can speak english, but We cant do it for homework, its all because of school. School means learning, and kids/adults dont like learning, therefore they dont pay attention which concludes to failing.

To be fair, most high school English classes are not English.  They're literature classes, they don't focus on the symantics of language but rather books.  Why they're called "English" is beyond me.

Americans overgeneralize a lot of the rules for languages (I know a lot of people that say "a" when they should say "an" and vice versa).  They also short cut a lot of speech "I think it's a bad idea" versus "I think that it's a bad idea", and don't know when they're using slang (or non-standard words) like "he snuck into the kitchen" as opposed to "he sneaked into the kitchen".

And what with instant messagers and text messages, the language is degrading even more!  I actually hear friends using these internet abbreviations in convorsation...  Pretty soon we'll de-evolve to the point that no one can maintain the computer systems that brought rise to this abomination of the english language.  Then when the computers and the internet finally goes down for lack of maintenance, we will all be reduced to painting on walls.

Eventually one of the morons will find his way into a missle silo somewhere, and in an orgasmic button pushing frenzy he will key in the launch codes.  The missles will fire, targeted to random places around the globe.  And so the world will come to an end.

And then a few hundred years later, aliens will fly by (wondering what happened on the planet to destroy it) only to discover the history engraved on a wall painting:

    "k-boom c ya"

    It's depressing.

Wow that sounds horrible.  Some high schools don't prepare students for the challenges of college.  I can say this from my experience of going to college for the year. It doesn't sound right that she said he was an American.  The best thing you can tell him is better luck next time and to talk to other students to try to see whose a great teacher for the same english class.

Our teacher is great, she really elaborates all her lesson. I understand it well. The only thing in my mind now since I started going to American school is that,

"Why do I fully understand lessons here, and not in the Philippines?"

Our second language in the Philippines is English and most of the people knows English, but when I'm there I couldn't understand lessons. While here, it's like I already knew English my whole life.
