Sandaime Kazekage, The Third Wind Shadow, is considered to be the most powerful Kazekage in the history of the Hidden Sand Village. He had a special ability which allowed him to convert his chakra into magnetic forces, and use iron to attack his opponents.

Despite being the Sand Village's strongest Kazekage, he was kidnapped during a war several years before the start of the Naruto series. Three years into the series, the Akatsuki member, and former Sand ninja, Sasori reveals to Sakura and Sand Village elder, Chiyo, that he had killed the Third Kazekage and turned him into a puppet.

Yondaime Kazekage, the Fourth Wind Shadow,  is  the father of Gaara, Temari and Kankuro. He is also the one who had the one-tailed demon tanuki, Shukaku, sealed within Gaara so that he could become the village's ultimate weapon. 

However, as time passed, the Fourth felt as if he made a mistake and labeled Gaara as a failed experiment who was a threat to the village. Soon he began issuing orders for Gaara's assassination, however, none of them were successful. several years later, he was killed by Orochimaru who took on his identity to invade the Hidden Leaf Village during the Chuunin Exams.

Godaime Kazekage, the Fifth Wind Shadow,  is more commonly known as Gaara - the host of the one-tailed demon, Shukaku. He is also the son of the Fourth Kazekage and younger brother of Temari and Kankuro.

Gaara was initially labeled as a failed experiment and many people were hired by his father to kill him. This drove Gaara insane and lead him to believe his reason for existence is to kill others. Eventually, he fought with Naruto who told him that other people - friends - is what makes a person stronger. Gaara refuted and said that it's love for oneself, but after getting beat up, he realized Naruto was right.

Sometime afterwards, Gaara was elected to became Kazekage by the Sand's Village council as he wanted to work hard, be accepted, and be of value to others by using his power to protect them.
