    Technique Guide
Jutsu     Jutsu, or skills/techniques, are the mystical arts a ninja will utilize in battle. To use a jutsu, the ninja will need to use his chakra. Chakra comes from two places. (1) the body energy inherent in your trillions of cells and (2) the mental & spiritual energy gained from exercise and experience.

To perform a jutsu, the ninja will bring out and release these two energies. By forming handseals, the ninja is able manifest the desired jutsu. Because of the extensive number of hand seals and different combinations, there are thousands of potential jutsu to be discovered.

Jutsu      Based on which jutsu the ninja uses, the type and amount of chakra will be different as would the elements you would be to employ. The five main elemental styles are also the five names for the Five Great Shinobi Countries: Fire, Wind, Lightning, Earth and Water. Each ninja has the potential to better utilize one of these styles and potentially more. A special elemental detecting paper is used to determine ones type. The paper comes from trees which are specially grown with chakra. When the ninja imbues the paper with a portion of their chakra, the paper will alter to reveal one's type. The paper will rip in two for Wind, burn for Fire, become wet for Water, fall apart for Earth and crumple for Lightning. For example Kakashi is a predisposed Lightning type, while Sasuke is both Lightning and Fire for the Uchiha clan specialty.

The five elements themselves form a cyclical strong and weak relationship against each other. The element of Fire is stronger than Wind, as the usage of Wind merely increases the strength of Fire. So if a Fire jutsu came up against an equal strength Wind jutsu, the Fire jutsu is more likely to win out. Wind in turn is stronger than Lightning. Lightning is stronger than Earth and Earth in stronger than Water. Water finishes the cycle by naturally winning out over Fire.

    Ninjutsu - The Five Elements
    Katon - Fire
    Fire2.gif
Katon, or Fire Element, takes the form of fire and flame attacks. These can be fire balls or extended flame throwing.
    Fire.gif
    Fuuton - Wind
    Wind2.gif
Fuuton, or Wind Element, takes the form of wind based attacks. These can be huge gusts or sustained wind storms.
    Wind.gif
    Raiton - Lightning
    Lightning2.gif
Raiton, or Lightning Element takes the form of electrical and lightning based attacks.
    Lightning.gif
    Doton - Earth
    Earth2.gif
Doton, or Earth Element, takes the form of earth and mud based attacks. These can be walls made from mud or the ninja maneuvering himself below ground to attack his opponent from below.
    Earth.gif
    Suiton - Water
    Water2.gif
Suiton, or Water Element, takes the form of water based attacks. These can be walls of water used as shields or water formed into large striking jets.
    Water.gif
    Other Elements
    Mokuton - Wood
    Wood2.gif
Mokuton, or Wood Element, takes the form of wood attacks and defenses. The usage of this elemental style is a hidden technique unique to Shodai Hokage and others who possess his same exact genes. Mokuton is formed through the simultaneous usage of Water and Earth styles.
    Wood.gif
    Hyouton - Ice
    Ice2.gif
Hyouton, or Ice Element, takes the form of Ice attacks and defenses. The usage of this elemental style has been seen by Haku and ninja from Hidden Snow, however the manga has stated this ability was unique to Haku's bloodline. Hyouton is formed through the simultaneous usage of Water and Wind styles.

    * While Naruto's official rank is a Gennin, he is actually a Jounin (if not Kage) level ninja in Part 2. Because he was away from the Hidden Leaf Village training for 2.5 years with Jiraiya, Naruto was been unable to take the Chuunin Exam at the time his friends did to increase their rank.

*While Sasuke's official rank is a Gennin, he is actually a Jounin (if not Kage) level ninja in Part 2. To be more accurate, Sasuke is considered as a "missing ninja" rather than a Gennin. This is because Sasuke left the the Hidden Leaf Village without permission from the Hokage. Gennin-Chuunin-Jounin-Kage ranks are more so associated within villages. To Sasuke, rank does not mean much. He is more concerned about how powerful he actually is. Sasuke wants to kill his brother Itachi, so being ranked a "Jounin" for example, does not mean he can complete his task.

    Manga Pilot
Baby KyuubiIn 1997 Masashi Kishimoto would create the first published incarnation of the Naruto series. Debuting in Akamaru Jump, the Naruto one-shot would be Kishimoto's first incarnation of the Naruto universe. Though the plot of the one-shot bears little resemblance to the later shonen manga, many of the same character and ninja themes would be displayed for the first time.

    The Story

Naruto is a young demon fox that goes about life in the form of a young boy. Because his father attacked the ninja village and caused a lot of death and destruction, the villagers are distrusting of him. To that end he grew very resentful of their angry looks. The village chief was the sole survivor of nine powerful shinobi who were gathered to fight the elder fox. The chief took pity on Naruto and allowed him to be raised in the village. While he was growing up, Naruto would learn several of the ninja jutsu including the Henge (transformation technique). Because Naruto constantly was having problems finding any friends, the village chief sent him into the city to try and make one. The chief fears Naruto will become like his father so he hopes a friendship will put him on a good path.

After traveling to the city, Naruto stops at a ramen stand to get a bite to eat. While there a drunken patron enters the stand. He is Kuroda, a washed up artist whose has been repairing a valuable painting named Symbol. After he nearly passes out, another man enters the stand. This is Sergeant Matsushima, who is in charge of protecting the painting once Kuroda finishes his repairs. After Matsushima leaves, the owner of the stand gives Naruto a free bowl of ramen in exchange for Naruto taking the artist home. Naruto manages to bring the passed out artist to his studio.

At the studio Naruto meets Kuroda's assistant Takano Takashi. Takashi shows Naruto Symbol, and tells him it was painted by nationally known artist Saburo. Naruto notes the painting smells bad and Takashi tells him it was made with a special paint. As Naruto gets near the painting a uniformed police officer enters and tells Naruto to back away and be careful. He is in charge of helping protect the expensive painting. He then excuses himself stating he needs to use the restroom.

Soon Kuroda awakes and he asks Naruto to join him in a drink, though Naruto states he is not old enough to drink, he caves in shortly and begins to drink with the artist. While inebriated Naruto decides to show the men his transformation technique, a variation of what we now know as the Oiroke no Jutsu, Naruto changes into an attractive young woman who only wears a bathing suit. Naruto is not skilled enough though so one of his tails sticks out from his tailbone. As the two artists freak out at the strange occurrence before them, we see a man in the outside shadows begin to put a silencer on a gun.

Kuroda asks Naruto what he is doing in the city and Naruto tells him he was sent to find a friend. Kuroda says that is foolish and that you can only trust yourself. Then he rose to head to bed. Takashi then tells Naruto of the sad events of Kuroda's past. His best-fried Saburo stabbed Kuroda after Kuroda took over his job as the chairman of the cultural advancement committee. Saddened by his actions, Saburo returned to his apartment and painted Symbol before taking his own life.

Takashi then states the painting depicts two tree limbs reaching out to intertwine, symbolically representing two hands shaking forming a new trust. In the intertwined branches is a birds nest showing the good that came from their meeting. Takashi asks Naruto if he wants to be his friend, this embarrasses Naruto as he had never shaken someone's hand before. Happily Naruto agrees and he appears to have made his first real friend. Takashi tells Naruto he can sleep in his bedroom as he watches over the painting. While Naruto sleeps a mysterious man enters the apartment and shoots Takashi in the head. The man then places the murder weapon into Naruto's bag. When Naruto wakes the next morning, Sergeant Matsushima is there with Kuroda. Matsushima accuses Naruto of murdering Takashi. Kuroda himself angrily yells at Naruto, asking if he murdered Takashi and stole the painting. Naruto denies this and Kuroda remembers when Naruto told him that no one ever trusts him. Feeling pity for the young boy, Kuroda tells Matsushima to take him in his place, allowing Naruto to find the real killer.

Naruto is released so he begins to travel around the city asking people about the painting. After having no luck for week, Naruto stops in a park to ponder his luck, thinking maybe it would be better to just run away. He then overhears some young men describing one of their group named Hiroshi who is absent. They call him an outsider who only hangs around with them to look cool. Naruto then thinks back to how he is similar. One of the young men denies this though, saying Hiroshi has always been a good friend who helps them out. He then tells the group to stop talking about him in that fashion or he won't forgive them. Hiroshi then arrives and brings his friends some cool drinks. After seeing the compassion displayed for their friend Naruto cries thinking of his own life. Naruto then runs up to Hiroshi and yells he is jealous of him and then runs off, leaving Hiroshi very confused.

Seeing that Kuroda believed in him, Naruto's faith is renewed so he begins to search again. He travels to the apartment of the officer who was on duty at the time the murder happened. Naruto enters the apartment and asks the man if he saw anyone suspicious that night. Naruto then says maybe the officer himself took the painting, he tells Naruto this is foolish but then Naruto asks why he smells so strongly of the painting. Naruto states he has a keen sense of smell and he noticed its foul odor when he first saw the painting. We see the officer reach for a knife and then cut to Matsushima's apartment.

The officer is there, telling the sergeant he murdered Naruto when he came asking questions. As Matsushima turns, the reader sees Symbol in the background hanging on his wall. He says that is perfect, the public will then think Naruto took the painting and went into hiding. We then see tails whip out from behind the officer, it is Naruto in disguise. After ending the illusion, a panicked Matsushima attempts to shoot Naruto with his gun but Naruto states he will get revenge for the murder. Naruto uses his demon fox technique to return to his natural nine-tails form. Using his tails he captures Matsushima and the police arrive to arrest him. Matsushima denies he is guilty but the police tell him to give it up, the other officer admitted to the crime.

Kuroda then approaches Naruto and thanks him for helping him. He tells Naruto he helped him gain the ability to believe in people again. Naruto himself also thanks the artist for believing in him. Naruto then asks Kuroda to shake his hand, but the artist thinks it is creepy. He caves anyway and the two men become friends. He tells Naruto he would travel to the village with him but he is busy. Naruto says that is okay, he will try making more friends in the city. Kuroda then tells Naruto he will buy him a round of drinks for the road, Naruto says if he is buying he would rather have ramen instead. Naruto then thinks that maybe the chief was right; friends aren't so bad after all.

    The Characters
    Uzumaki Naruto

In the one-shot, Naruto has a greater tie to the Kyuubi. Instead of containing the Kyuubi, Naruto himself is the son of the demon fox. When his father was killed by nine powerful shinobi, the sole surviving shinobi (the current village chief), took pity on Naruto and allowed him to be raised in the village. Like the Naruto we know, this Naruto was also looked down upon by others in the village. Due to this he developed a deep bitterness, with his pranks being more mean spirited and obnoxious.

Though his natural form was that of a small nine-tails fox, Naruto moved about in normal life in the form of a human boy. Like the current Naruto, this one would also change his form using the Henge technique. In the one-shot Naruto changes into a bat and an attractive young woman. Unfortunately Naruto was not skilled at the technique so one tail remains untransformed whenever he changes his look.

    Village Chief

The current village chief was one of the nine powerful shinobi gathered to fight the demon fox that was attacking the village. All his comrades died but he survived to go on to run the village. He took pity on Naruto and directs him to find a real friend since Naruto only seems to make enemies.
    Kuroda

After his best friend Saburo painted Symbol and committed suicide, Kuroda became a shadow of the great artist he once was. He began to drink heavily and become distrusting of those around him.
    Takano Takashi

Takano Takashi is the assistant of Kuroda. While training to become an artist, he helps Kuroda repair Symbol.
    Sergeant Matsushima

Sergeant Matsushima was the police administrator responsible for the transportion and protection of the valuable Symbol painting after Kuroda finished repairing it.
    Unnamed Police Officer

This unnamed village policeman was responsible for helping protect Symbol while it was in Kuroda's possession.
    The World
    Mt. Oinari

The ninja village which the demon fox attacked, it is the current home of the young demon fox Naruto.

    City

When the village chief directs Naruto to find a friend, he heads to the city. Unlike the current universe, this world is more highly developed with tall industrial buildings and motorized vehicles.

    Ichiraku Ramen

Though not located in the Mt. Oinari ninja village, the one-shot universe also is home to a familiar ramen stand.

Naruto Movie One Guide
    Naruto Movie Poster

"Naruto: Daikatsugeki! Yukihime Ninpoucho! & Konoha Undoukai"
(Naruto: Furious Action! The Snow Princess Ninja Chronicles & The Konoha Athletic Meet!"
Original Theatrical Date: August 21st, 2004

What's the story? Movie One tells the story of Kakashi and Team 7 travelling to the Snow Country, a previously unknown country in the world of Naruto. A famous actress is threatening to quit her role on a film because she doesn't want to travel to a location shoot in the Snow Country. Team 7 and Kakashi serve as her protectors as she is forced to travel to the location. While there she comes under attack by the Snow ninja hired by the Daimyou of the Country. Can Naruto and his comrades protect the actress? What is the secret of her past?

The movie includes a Naruto animated short involving an athletic competition that is held in Konoha. This short is very humorous in nature and has no real way of *ing into continuity. Take it with a grain of salt and you may enjoy it.

What do I think? This movie is one of the better attempts to write a story in the Naruto universe from writers not named Kishimoto. The action and jutsus in the movie are mostly new and nice to look at, the actions of some of the characters seem out of character for the most part, particular Kakashi with certain actions. The new chakra boosting technology is rather lame, but otherwise the movie is fairly good attempt at bringing us new Naruto stories. A full story breakdown and screencaps can be expected for this section with the DVD release this April.
