Inukotsu was born in a small village in the Earth country. The day of his birth was also the date that an enormous demon, named Oni no Tsuchi, attacked his village and was sealed inside the body of a newborn infant by an unknown warrior. That infant was Inukotsu. Thought once to be a side affect of the demon, Inu was born blind. It wasn't until he showed a rare talent within his family that it was realized that Inu had a Kekkei Genkai: the Tsuchigan. Because of this, Inu was born with the innate ability to see the vibrations of the earth beneath him. Sort of like seeing with his feet. Ever since, his Grandfather, also a user of the Tsuchigan, has been training his Grandson to wield the Tsuchigan as an offensive AND defensive ability.

Two years ago, it was learned that Inu had not known what sleep was. He was training with his Grandfather when he asked what rest meant. For 15 years, Inu had never slept a minute of his life. It was then that Inu's Grandfather taught Inu the Play Possum Jutsu to force himself to sleep. That was the last thing his Grandfather had ever been able to teach him. That night, it was found-out that when or if Inu falls asleep, the Oni no Tsuchi takes over his body until Inu reaches a conscious level on his own. Meaning that no matter how much you beat him up while asleep, you cannot force him to awaken. That night, Inu killed his Grandfather and the rest of his fellow villagers. When he awoke 4 days later, he cried 3 days straight in a row over the loss of his family and friends. After that, Inu gathered up of what was left and buried the bodies. His showing of respect for the dead and his burial of the bodies allowed him to reach the pinnacle of his family's Kekkei Genkai's powers. In addition, his chakra and the demon's chakra is of the same element, increasing his power further.

Since then, Inu has traveled the lands alone and does not allow himself to get close to another person, lest he destroy them too.
