Voted Best Clan & Add Awards To Profile!

The Clan of the Hidden Orb has been voted as the best clan on Hokage's Room!  Thanks out to all of the voters!

Best Clan

If you were lucky enough to be voted for an award, here's how to add your award to your profile!  At the bottom of your "About Me" section in your edit profile, use the following HTML

<h4>Awards</h4><p><a href="http://www.hokagesroom.com/forums/?view=posts&forum_id=9&topic_id=397241&start=0"><img src="AwardPictureURLHere" alt="AwardNameHere"></a></p>

Put your award picture link (for example: http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j128/alexanchondo/TSAwards/BClan.png ) instead of the word 'AwardPictureURLHere'.

Then put your award name in place of the word 'AwardNameHere' (for example: Best Clan )

Here is an example of my profile:

Stronger Passwords

Throughout the time that this community has been open, many users claim that they've been "hacked".  What they don't understand is the fact that most of these "hackings" are mistakes with their passwords.

First it was popular for account theives to make a fake account and then provide a victim with the password to the fake account.  They would then ask for the victim's password, saying that they could be trusted since they gave away the password to the fake account.  Please know that if you give away your password it is not hacking, you openly gave them access to your account and nothing can be done.

Then it became popular for account thieves to guess passwords.  Many members will use passwords that are VERY easy to guess, like "naruto" or "sasuke".  If you have a Naruto character's name for your password you should change it immediately.

Top 10 Most Commonly Used Passwords:
1.) password
2.) god
3.) love
4.) sex
5.) 123456
6.) abc123
7.) qwerty
8.) letmein
9.) monkey
10.) [name] - your name, your screen name, a favorite character's name, bf/gf name

If your password is in the top ten list, change your password immediately.

You should make your password something personal to you.  Your favorite sports team, or your favorite food.  Add in your favorite number or day of the week.  Do not let your password be related to the website or to your username.

Also, you need to make sure of is that your password is long!  Let me give you some statistics on how long it takes to guess passwords based on how many letters they are.

Number of Letters in PasswordHow Long it will take to Guess the Password (Length Known)How Long it will take to Guess the Password (Length Unknown)
1 62 tries 62 tries
2 3,844 tries 3,906 tries
3 238,328 tries 242,234 tries
4 14,776,336 tries 14,800,570 tries
5 916,132,832 tries 930,933,402 tries
6 56,800,235,584 tries 57,731,168,986 tries
7 3,521,614,606,208 tries 3,579,345,775,194 tries
8 218,340,105,584,896 tries 221,919,451,360,090 tries
9 13,537,086,546,263,552 tries 13,759,005,997,623,642 tries
10 839,299,365,868,340,224 tries 853,058,371,865,963,866 tries

As you can see, the number of tries it takes to guess the password gets insanely huge with just 1 more letter.  While it may take a human person a long time to guess a 3 letter password, it would take a computer program only minutes.  However if you make a password 7 characters long, it would take a computer almost a year.  If you have at least 8 letters, then your password will most likely never be guessed because it would take WAY too long for anyone to really try.

Also notice that if someone doesn't know how long your password is, it will take them EVEN MORE times to guess how long the password is.  This is because they have to try doing 3 letters first, then they have to try 4 letters, then they have to try 5 letters.

Another great way to keep your password from being guessed is to replace letters with numbers and sybmols.  For example:

sasuke could be:
5a5uk3
Note: Do not use a naruto character's name for your password, even if you use the number/symbol trick.

Notice that the numbers/symbols look like the letters for the password.

Letter (Alphabetically)NumberSymbol
a @
A 4 ^
e &
E 3
g 9
G 6
H #
i 1 !
k <
l 1 /, \, |, [, ], (, )
o 0
oo 8 %
s 5 $
t 7 +
v ^, <, >

If you have more letter/number/symbol combinations, comment below.

Finally, most people use either all capital or all lower case letters.  You should mix them up!  For example, make your first and last letters capital letters.

naruto would be:
Narut0

Or if you have two symbols separated by a letter, then make the letter into a capital letter so that when you're typing your symbols you don't have to let go of the "shift" key.  For example:

shikamaru would be:
5h!K@M@ru

The capital K and M make it easier to type because of the symbols surrounding them (you can hold shift for all of them).

This website doesn't currently allow the use of symbols, so you'll be limited to just numbers and letters.  However you're now on the right track to making good passwords that people can't guess.

How To Put Your Clan In Your Profile

UPDATE! The_Hokage has fixed the clan membership display, so this is no longer necessary.

To preserve the history of Hokage's Room, here is the old entry:

At the bottom of your "About Me" section in your edit profile, use the following HTML

<h4>Clan</h4><p><a href="clanURLhere">clanNAMEhere</a></p>

Put your clan link (for example: http://www.hokagesroom.com/group/clan-of-the-hidden-orb/ ) instead of the word 'clanURLhere'.

Then put your clan name in place of the word 'clanNAMEhere' (for example: Clan of the Hidden Orb )

Here is an example of my profile:

Clan Membership

People have been sending me private messages asking if they can join The Clan Of The Hidden Orb.  I'm sorry to say, but membership is closed for a reason.  Only the Hokage's Room elite are permitted to join.

So how can you prove yourself to be elite shinobi?  You must be an all around outstanding member of the Hokage's Room community.  That said, you lose "points" for asking to join the clan.  You gain "points" for helping others and being friendly.

Some members of The Clan Of The Hidden Orb were unable to officially join the clan because they were already involved with or were leading their own clans, or they have been missing in action.  Here is our official member list, along with why they were worthy of joining:

Members:

DisturbedPuppy For his outstanding helpfulness, and courtesy.
For being runner-up on link sending in Mission 15(HKRMv1): Show off the NARUTO - Ultimate Ninja Heroes Videos! mission.
Midori Found one of the 5 hidden orbs.

Make Your Internet (Slightly) Faster

Some users have complained that Hokage's Room takes too long to load, so in this blog entry we give out some tips on getting it to load faster! Smile

The browser cache will download websites to your hard drive temporarily to make the pages load faster.  If it's too small, it will delete some of the temporary stuff and have to re-download it when you visit again.  So, by increasing your browser cache you can load more pages up faster. It's generally a good idea to double your browser cache to improve performance (if you set a browser cache to larger than 1024 MB - it could actually slow down the speed of loading pages, so do not go above 1024MB).

To increase browser cache size limit:

Internet Explorer:
Tools > Internet Options

  1. Remain in the "General" tab.
  2. Under the section "Browsing History", click the "Settings" button to the right of the "Delete" button (the "Delete" button is the "Delete Files..." button on Internet Explorer 6).
  3. You should see a number somewhere near the middle. If it is less than "1024" then multiply it by 2 (but do not go above 1024).
  4. Click "OK" two times (or until you've gotten rid of the boxes that you brought up.

Firefox:
Tools > Options > Advanced
  1. In the "Cache" subsection, it has "Use up to" and the default value should be 50. Turn that to 100. If you have a different value, multiply your value by 2 (but do not go above 1024).

Opera:
Tools > Preferences > Advanced (tab) > History (on the left menu)
  1. The "Disk Cache" should have a drop down menu. I think the default is 20 MB. Go to either 50 or 100. Since Opera doesn't let you go past 400 - you can pick any value that is higher than what you have. *Do NOT* fuss with the "memory cache" though. It is not the same as "Disk Cache".
  2. Click "OK".

Safari:
As I understand it, the option to change the cache size has been removed.

Also, third party cookies sometimes monitor where you go on the internet and tell advertising companies about where you go. This can slow down your speed a lot when there are a bunch on your computer.

To block 3rd party cookies:

Internet Explorer:
Tools > Internet Options > Privacy (tab) > Advanced (button)
  1. Make sure there is a checkmark next to "Override automatic cookie handling"
  2. Under "First-party cookies" mark "Accept".
  3. Under "Third-party cookies" mark "Block".
  4. Make sure that there is a checkmark next to the box near the bottom that says "Always allow session cookies".
  5. Click "OK" two times (or until you've gotten rid of the boxes that you brought up.

Firefox:
In your address bar (where you would type in "hokagesroom.com") type this:
about:config
You'll see a big list of stuff here. It may be hard to see, but at the top there is a search box labeled "Filter". Type this in:
  • network.cookie
The list will shrink as you type, until you get down to just a few options (should be around 9).
  1. Double click on "network.cookie.cookieBehavior", and it will ask you what value you want to make it (it should have a default of "0").
  2. Change the value to "1" (without the quotes).
  3. Click "OK".
  4. Double click on "network.cookie.alwaysAcceptSessionCookies. There should be no prompt, it will simply change from false to true. Make sure it says true.
  5. Close out of Firefox, and start it up again.

Opera:
Tools > Preferences > Cookies (in the left menu)
  1. Mark the option that says "Accept only cookies from the sites I visit".
  2. Click "OK".

Safari:
By default, Safari blocks third party cookies. Yay for you! However, if you want to double check:
Safari > Preferences > Security
In the "Accept cookies", the 3rd option ("Only Sites you Navigate to") should be marked.

Just because you've blocked 3rd party cookies, doesn't mean that the ones that are still on your computer will be gone. You will need to delete your cookies (and you WILL have to re-login on every page that you sign into if you do delete the cookies).

To Delete Browser Cookies:

Internet Explorer:
(Version 7)
Tools > Delete Browsing History > Delete Cookies (button) > Close (button)
(Version 6)
Tools > Internet Options
  1. Remain in the general tab
  2. Click the "Delete Cookies" button.
  3. Click "OK".

Firefox:
Tools > Options > Privacy
  1. Under the "Private Data" subsection, click the "Clear now..." button.
  2. Make sure that everything is unchecked except for "Cookies"
  3. Click "Clear Private Data Now".
  4. Click "OK"

Opera:
Tools > Delete Private Data
  1. Click the "Details" button.
  2. Uncheck all of the boxes except "Delete all cookies".
  3. Click the "Delete" button.

Safari:
Safari > Preferences > Bookmarks > Show Cookies (button) > Remove All (button) > Done (button)

The Opera Advantage
So you want pages to load faster? Here comes the Opera web browser to the rescue.
Tools > Preferences > Network (left menu).
Change "Max Connections to a server" from "8" to "16". Click "OK". Enjoy the slightly faster speed. Do not go higher than 16, or you will open too many connections and can actually slow it down.

There are ways of doing this for Internet Explorer, but they are too risky to actually tell you how to do here (you can mess up your computer trying to do it). There's also a way to do it with Firefox, but I don't know that way - but it involves the about:config I mentioned earlier (in the blocking 3rd party cookies part). I am unsure if Safari can do this at all.

While we're discussing internet browser stuff, I might as well remind everyone how they can set their browser homepage to Hokage's Room.

To Set Your Internet Browser's Home Page:

Internet Explorer:
Tools > Internet Options
Should have "Home Page" listed right there.

Firefox:
Tools > Options > Main
Should see "Home Page" listed there.

Opera:
Tools > Preferences
Should have "Home Page" listed there.

Safari:
Safari > Preferences > General
You should see a spot "Home Page Location(s)".

Just add "http://www.hokagesroom.com" to the spot that asks for your Home Page.
